As a result of an investigation by the US Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division (WHD) and state labor agencies, two California restaurants have been fined $1.9 million dollars for a variety of wage and hour violations. California's labor department alleged these restaurants failed to pay $1.1 million dollars of minimum wages, $377,000 in overtime and $154,000 worth of meal breaks. Know as the "Misclassification Initiative," fifteen states have entered into relationships with WHD to combat wage theft.
